Good morning, everyone! My name is Wang Liyan. I’m very glad to be your English teacher for this semester. I hope we can have a good time together. At the very beginning of your college life, I want to ask you a question: Why do you come here?
Some of you might say, “well, my parents said I had to, so, here I come.” More ambitious ones might say, “I want to be an engineer/ a lawyer/ a scientist etc., so I come here to learn the knowledge I need to realize my dream.”
Which is your answer? The first or the second? Would you like to know the answer of the former American president, Barack Obama? Now let’s listen to a part from one of his speeches on education.:
“I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself. Every single one of you has something that you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That's the opportunity an education can provide.
No matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that you’ll need an education to do it. You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You are going to need a good education for every single one of  those careers. You’ve got to train for it and work for it and learn for it.
And this isn’t just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. The future of America depends on you.”
Now, let us think about a question: what is the keyword of Obama’s speech? Yes, it is “responsibility,” responsibility for yourself and that for your country.
Back to the question I asked at the very beginning of the class. Why do you go to a college? Neither of the answers we discussed about should be the ultimate purpose for us to get together here on this campus. Having graduated from university for more than 10 years, I deeply realize that we are here not just to acquire the knowledge of any specific field; we are here to learn how to become a young adult, a trusyworthy friend, a filial son or daughter, a loving husband or wife, a caring father or mother, a friendly neighbour, a hard-working career man or woman, a law-abaiding citizen. We are here to learn how to fulfill all the responsibilities the future will require of us. We are here to learn how to be a better self.
Then, my second question: why do you learn English? The answer seems obvious. Many of you might say, “well, do I have any choice? We just have to.” Yes, English is a major part of the college entrance exams and the certificate of CET-4 is almost a must in job hunting. A large part of you might think English useless without those different kinds of exams. But do you know what did Cai Kangyong, a famous Taiwan talk show host, say about English learning? He said (he said this in Chinese, so you can give your ears a rest) “15岁觉得游泳难,放弃游泳,到18岁遇到一个你喜欢的人约你去游泳,你只好说“我不会耶”。18岁觉得英文难,放弃英文,28岁出现一个很棒但要会英文的工作,你只好说“我不会耶”。人生前期越嫌麻烦,越懒得学,后来就越可能错过让你动心的人和事,错过新风景”. So don’t give it up and regret when you find you really need it. Besides, you must know that English is the most widely used language in the world. Don’t you think it wonderful that the master of the language will lead you to a different culture and provide you with a new perspective to look at the world? The more we know, the more open-minded and tolerant we will be. Don’t tell me English is useless, that’s because you’ve never had the chance to go out and have a look at a different sight.
Then, the third question, how should we learn English? I have some tips to share with you. First, you should form the habit of note taking. Listen carefully and write down the usages, examples, explanations and other important information as much as possible. Second, you can do the passage dictation regularly to improve the efficiency of your listening and the speed of your writing. Third, read English books as much as you can to be better aquianted with the language  and the culture and to enhance your language sense.
Third, we’ll talk about the question many of you are very concerned about, that is, am I a teacher who fails students a lot? Well, it all depends. It all depends on whether you work hard in and out of class and prepare well for the exam. If you do what you sre supposed to do, you will have a very satisfying score. But if you fail to do that, maybe you will be failed in your exam in turn.
The last question, what can you do to get a high score for the course? To answer this question, we should first know how the score is calculated. There are three factors to be considered when I try to give the score you truly deserve, your daily performance, which accounts for 20% of the final score you get, your score of the mid-term exam, which also accounts for 20%, and your score of the final exam, which accounts for 60%. To lighten your pressure in the exam, you can work hard to get a good daily performance score by attending the class as much as possible, taking an active part in class and doing your homework without coping or any other forms of cheating.
